The original Saginaw pump on my 77 Cutlass called it quits today. I'm going to rebuild it for originality, but for the moment i have a spare (known good) pump from a 91 Ford van that looks identical. Are the 2 pumps the same? Id love to do a quick pulley swap and be back in action until my rebuild kit gets here. Thanks guys, happy memorial day!
Most US automakers used Saginaw pumps (and frequently steering boxes) at one time or another. The basic pumps are the same. The reservoirs vary depending on application. The thing that controls output pressure is the flow control valve that is in the outlet port of the pump. You can swap those if needed. The mounting fasteners on the Saginaw pumps were SAE thread well into the 1990s, but the outlet port was swapped from inverted flare to o-ring eventually. Again, you can swap that fitting between pumps.
Wow... so it is. I even re read this post 3 times and i didn't catch my mistake. Chalk it up to a long day at work. Thank you guys so much for the info. I ordered the new pump today, and ill get it Thursday so i guess ill just wait, but ill keep this Ford pump for future now that i know it can be used. and ill try this again, happy labor day weekend!
Thanks Bill. I keep meaning to head down to the local record shop here and get a new needle for my record player. That will probably be the first one ill play once its fixed!
