P/B on my 56 Olds 98

My 56 Olds 98 has P/B, on some occassions when I press the brake especially when I get on the gas a bit, the pedal goes to the floor. I need to pump it to get the brakes working. What is happening and what do I need to do?

Sounds like your master cylinder could be shot. Are you losing brake fluid or is the level staying consistent? I highly recommend NOT driving that car until you sort it out. The stock master cylinder is a single piston type unit that has nothing to fall back on upon failure... All four wheels will lose brakes. In a modern dual master cylinder you will have two pistons that stop two wheels each... So to lose one piston means only losing brakes on 2 wheels.

My car does not stop either, despite the fact that I rebuilt my master cylinder and booster. I will be replacing my floor mounted brake unit with a more modern firewall mounted dual master. I was taking pictures as I went along to start a thread but progress has stopped on that project for now. Sorry if this response is jumbled I should be in bed. Good luck

Thank You

I was thinking that but I was told that it was good. I just want them fixed right. Thanks

Well if you're losing fluid it could possibly be a pinhole leak somewhere... But if not I would assume its the mc. Good luck
