Drum removal 68 Delmont 88

I’ve got some 20” Torque thrust on the way for my 68 Delmont 88 but I’d like to change the studs so the lug nuts have more purchase due to the thicker flanges of modern aluminum wheels and I figured I might as well clean them up and paint them while they’re off since they will be visible with the new wheels.

My question is just about drum removal and whether I can just tap them off or do I need to remove the cap and castle nuts? My Service manual doesn’t specify, just says “remove drum” and has some instructions for backing off the adjuster if necessary. The only video I can find is from a 69 and says that some of the drums were riveted to the backing plate and you have to remove the castle nut, however mine have no visible rivets like the video.

Just wanted to ask before I start bangin around and taking stuff apart.

Attaching a picture of my front drums

This must come up about once a month. Drums are held to the hubs with the pressed-in studs. There are no rivets. You have to remove the castellated nut and wheel bearings to get the hub/drum assembly off. Press out the studs and the drum and hub will separate.

Ok well I got them all off but the driver side rear. It spins freely but won’t come off. Is there a best order of operations from here? Tap around and use heat or just knock out the the little window and back off the adjuster in case there is a lip in there from wear?

Gave it a few more taps this morning and came right off, the penetrant did its job overnight.

Im excited to get this thing rollin. It’s been a year of sorting some things out and I’m about to knock out brakes, studs, springs, shocks and wheels.
