Discs were an option in '72, they were standard on the '71-'72 Vista Cruisers.

If the fluid reservoir has both wells the same size the front is drum. If the rear well is smaller than the front one they are disc.

disc drum

By 1972 almost all a-body cars were disc standard...Only the very low option cars would still be drum. Supreme SHOULD have front disc. VERY easy to bend a knee and look under the inside of the rim...lol. Jim

Who needs to look, Stevie Wonder could feel around and tell you what kind of brakes it has in about ten seconds blindfolded.
If it has Rally wheels you could stand 20 feet away and tell if it has disc brakes or not.

They did have manual disc brakes as an option Rob, you just had to order a W30 to get them.

On the '72 Cutlass Supreme models/equipment list disc brakes are option JL2, Brakes - power with front disc.
Power brakes are option J50, so they had manual drum brakes standard unless you ordered power drum brakes or discs, along with a manual trans with three on the tree.

Sandy's '72 Supreme is pretty well optioned and it has drums.

You are correct but you assume the person looking knows what the two terms mean.

This tells me he is unsure of the meaning of the terms or he should be going to a different parts store.

As Bluevista pointed out this is not the case. I have had two 72 Cutlass Supreme convertibles and they both had drums on the front. I do have a disk conversion for my current 72. I just need to get it done. Of course it is one of those typical "as long as I am doing this, I might as well do this" projects that will include front end rebuild, cleaning and painting all the parts when they are off and on and on.

The master cylinder O'Reilly has listed for 4-wheel drums is actually for 4-wheel disc brakes. The one they have for manual drum brakes has the front and rear reservoirs the same size.
