So today i pulled off the master cylinder to get a replacement and the auto parts store was showing something totally different then what i have. Is there any differences in master cylinder's from any of the 62's? The one i have has a part number of 5460982. Could this be the correct one or could it be from another GM?

 

If you are not overly concerned about originality...I would look into a dual reservoir master, and corresponding proportioning valve. Safety first.

 

While I agree that the dual reservoir M/C is safer, you will need to replumb your brake lines to use it. Also, four wheel drum brakes do not (and should not) use a proportioning valve. This is for disk brakes only.

 

I'm not to worried about originality but on a budget the disc conversion will not work for me just yet. Is there anyway to do a low buck conversion by pulling a majority of the system from another car?

 

I did not know that... thanks for the info. For the sake of more complete knowledge. What is different , or needs to be changed specifically in the plumbing in order to be correct?

I am pretty sure Olds used a Bendix and also used a Moraine master cylinder in '62's. Two different products, two different part numbers, but both work for the '62's. One book I have only goes to '61 part numbers, sorry.

 

Its ok i actually went and got one from a 62 imapala and works just fine. I still have my original that i took off the car to get rebuilt once i'm a little further on the car just for a hint of originality under the hood.
