71 convertible hydraulic piston replacement

Hey guys , well the Cutlass had her first problem (since i have owned it) over the weekend, the drivers side piston broke on the convertible top, i have already got my hands on a new one but im not really sure whats involved with changing it out. any tips or instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Not a really big deal. Obviously you will have to remove the back seat and the arm rest cover on the side. There will be two lines to it. Have plenty of rags to put underneath before you disconnect to lines. One you are done, I would try running the top up and down. You may have to top off the pump inside the trunk under the top well. This is where you really need some rags because it is a messy job. There is a rubber plug in the right side of the pump. This is where you fill the thing. I have used a small vacuum line attached to a small funnel. I had to trim a little off to make the end going into the pump tapered. If you can have somebody run the top up and down while you are adding fluid it will purge itself. I used automatic trans fluid and it works fine. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, found some more detailed instructions online, that plus the bit of direction from redoldsman, got it changed out in a few hours from start to finish. Works like new
