'56 Olds 88 Power Brake Repair

O.K. So I've read about the two different types of power brake units. I've read that the booster and master cylinder have to come out as a unit. I can see that this is going to be a bear to do. Heck, the manual sort of starts with "remove fender". That's scary enough.

These don't look like they are available just anywhere and I've found some good links here. Before I begin this, I would like any input that you think I should know.

Car owned since 1972 and purchased from original owner. Driven frequently until 2001 when a moron hit her and nearly totaled this beautiful car. Driving home from a restoration shop 180 miles away idling was off. Adjusted and later brakes seemed to come and go. Mostly there but sometimes would just disappear.

After arriving home brakes were not there more than they were there. When they were there the pedal was hard, but sometimes pedal just went right to floor. No leaks. I've checked and checked. Master cylinder was low. Filled it, but problem still persists.

Thought it was just the master cylinder, but can I or should I replace master cylinder and booster or do I have a choice? Want to order what I need before tearing this apart if I can see which brand it is.

Thanks for help from others that have done this to their '56's.

Remove the fender to take the unit out? I dont think so. The unit is held in place by four bolts that are accesable underneath the carpeting. Crack the brake line, and remove the acess panel underneath the carpet, undo the brake pedal, disconnect the vacuum line to the booster, and pull the unit out ( im sure i missed a couple of steps) There are a couple good places to get them rebuilt, and theres a list of people that can do them in Hemmings. Part of the problem you describe is lack of vacuum to the unit itself.

Thanks for the info. It does appear that the unit is bad, but on the plus side I found a matching unit that I can send off to be rebuilt without having to remove the one in the car.

I know I saw one or two sources here, just need to find them again and get it sent off this week. If you have the link or a recommendation, that would be helpful.

I would check the vacuum canister. It is behind the right front wheel. If it is leaking or damaged it could cause the problems you have. It is hard to get to but you can try and presurize it and see if it will hold like 20psi.
