Will a 1969 door skin fit on a 1968 door frame?

Hi All,

I have a 68 Cutlass 2 door hard top and I need to replace the door skin on the drivers side door. I have been unable to find a 1968 door for the car but i have found a few 1969 doors. My question is if we were to skin the 1969 door would it fit on the 1968 frame?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Ryan

Other than some notching around the vent window frame, yes. Compare the two carefully - I think others have been able to modify the complete 69 door shell to accept the 68 vent window and used it without the trouble of transferring the skin.

I'm pretty sure the 69 door lock comes up in a different place too

Mike,

Are you talking about the lock cylinder, the lock **** on the inside, or the actual latch mechanism?

The lock **** on the inside.

I ordered a set of 68 door panels for my car from Legendary a couple of years ago. About when they were supposed to be delivered I got a call from them saying they used the wrong uppers and the lock hole was located in the 69 position instead of the 68. They told me there was enough of a difference that the 69 location wouldn't work on the 68. The made a new set of panels and I got them two weeks later. I've never put the two years next to each other so I can't tell you for sure. It may have just been a story but they had no reason to lie because I wasn't hounding them or anything.

I used a donor 69 door for patches in the lower front and rear corner of my 68 doors (where they always rust) My door skins had very little rust so I didn't need to replace them.

I have found a set of 69 doors so I think I may just switch the whole units and run without the vent windows. I have always liked the one piece glass look over the vent windows. This car is meant to be a really fun driver, it is never intended to go back to stock. Installing a posi unit out of a 68 GTO this weekend.

Just following up on this thread because I found that the interior door panels definitely are not interchangeable without a lot of work. The lock **** location is different by at least 6" and obviously the vent windows aren't on the 69. As Joe said the skins themselves probably would have worked with a little tweaking

BTW if you're still interested in the skins these were pretty clean. The door frames themselves, not so good
