Exclamation Trim Question

Hey guys,

I really need your help. I just finished getting the paint on my '68 442 and am putting the trim on, but I've run into an issue.

What fasteners/clips do I use to hold down the chrome just below rear window, on the rear quarter? I can't figure out what to use. (I was not the one to remove the trim)

Here are a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about:

The car is nearly all put together, and needs to be done for my wedding this Saturday, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You!

Congratulations (I think). Hope your bride likes new paint smell....

The fasteners are plastic clips that slide onto those pegs. The trim snaps onto the trim as a pressure fit. They look something like this:

I don't know what size you need though - 1/2" 3/4" or 5/16". One of the 68 guys will likely chime in.

Maybe PM Mike (allyolds68) he likely knows. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...o=newpm&u=8244

Thank you for the congrats!

Unfortunately the rear trim doesn't have the pegs, they're holes. I guess that brings up my next question, are they supposed to be pegs and someone drilled them out?

No, they are holes and you have to remove the rear inside upholstery panels to install the nuts. The clips you want look like this:

You slide them into the trim like this:

Edit: Be sure to use body sealer on each stud where it goes in the hole to prevent water leaks.

Good to know. From the pics I thought those were the welded on tabs like the door trim on some of the other cars.

Actually, correction to my prior post. I don't think these particular stainless pieces will allow you to slide the clip in from the end. In that case, select a clip that's narrow enough to fit between the rolled lips on the backside of the trim. You need to spring the wire to snap the clip into place, then the wire holds it there. As you tighten the nut, the clip rotates so that it "bites" into the trim, ensuring that the ends of the clip are under the lips on the trim.

You might also find that the stainless has notches in a portion of the lips on the backside that make it easier to insert the clips.

Thanks for the advice joe.

I'll be putting the trim on tonight, as long as the interior cooperates with me and I can get at the holes
