Hey all does anyone have ideas on how I can get my passenger side mirror to stay where I adjust it? It's loose enough at the ball and socket to drop down.
Pic is for reference.
When the ball and socket won't stay put I've always considered that worn out and needing replaced. Maybe someone here will have an idea of a way to fix it.
Try a little drop of clear coat with hardener on the ball, I've had that work for a couple of years. I applied it with a match stick and moved it a little before it became completely hard. Only took a minute to do or redo...Tedd
When the mirror on my '68 started doing the same, and after something else broke the glass, I discovered that on the inside of the mirror is a small plate that is riveted to the mirror housing in two places and applies pressure to the inside of that ball to hold position. One of the rivets in my mirror had come loose and was no longer applying pressure to the small plate / ball allowing it to flop around. I drilled out the rivet and threaded it for a screw to fix it. After replacing the glass (by an automotive glass shop) its been like new for at least 30 years. Unfortunately, you can't get to those rivets with the glass in place. Since the glass is glued to mounting posts in the mirror housing, popping it loose will risk breaking the glass.
Position it then add a dab of Cyanoacrylate (Loctite super glue) to the top of the ball and let it wick down. Just a little bit. Mask off the paint as it will damage it.
Do a little home work as they make many types of bonding applications fast dry, slow dry, gel etc. They make one that allows a little more time to dry to avoid instant bonding. That will give you an extra moment or three of fiddle time.
You will need to reapply it if the mirror gets moved but its the same easy process.
Update: I put a couple drops of blue loctite on the ball Sunday afternoon and set the mirror into place. Let it cure for about 36 hours and drove it to work today. Mirror didn't budge and just to double check I gave it a firm grip and tried to move it. It stayed put. So I think that did the trick
