Looking for a way to lower underhood temps and to get more air to engine.Thinking of poss going with a 2" cowel hood set up, has anyone done this on a 68?
Any pics of this set up out there?
Any tips or suggestions?
Trying to stay low key I don't want some huge scoop on my car!

 

First, which are you trying to do? Lowering underhood temps requires a way to let air OUT. Increasing airflow to the engine requires a way to get air IN. One scoop won't do both. The whole point of a cowl induction scoop is to tap into the high pressure at the base of the windshield to increase airflow to the carb. It won't vent hot underhood air. More to the point, these cars did not overheat when new. If you have an overheating problem, fix the cause, don't band-aid it.

As for scoops on the 1968 cars, I actually added an L88 scoop to my first 1968 442, back in the mid-70s. The L88 scoop fit well with the lines of the hood. I used a flat hood from a non-442, since the raised center on the 442 hoods looks kinda stupid with an additional scoop. I have a photo of that car someplace, but I can't find it at the moment.

 

Car is not running hot but would like to vent some of the heat under the hood.

 

Well, whatever you do, don't hack up a good 68 442 hood. You can get a fiberglass flat 68 hood here, which makes it very easy to add the scoop of your choice.

I had an extra set of these laying around and I cut them out. Do you think if I had them replated and modify the hood this would work?

 

Just remember if air can come out, water can get in. I don't see the under hood temp being an issue, I would work on getting cool air into the air cleaner.

Joe do you have any experience with those hoods as far as fit and finish and overall quality ?

 

I had a USBody hood on my 70 Cutlass. As far as fiberglass parts go they are pretty nice overall. Nothing special but I don't think any of the manufacturers are that special. They all require work and tweaking to fit well.

 

Not with that particular part, but don't expect aftermarket 'glass parts to fit as well as factory. They always require some additional fitment and finishing labor to look right. Fiberglass always has some ripple to it anyway that requires a fair amount of blocking and skim coat.
