Head lamp bezels

Need to know if anyone has used a 1972 Headlight bezel on a 1970? I like the look of the black highlighted bezel and was wondering if it could be a direct swap (or with little modification).

I could, I guess, modify the original ones to give it the black highlight look.

Let me know. From the pictures I have seen of the 72 bezels, the mounting holes look like they are in a different position as compared to my 70 bezels. Hard to say, unless I had them in person or if someone else has already done this.

i am not sure if the 72 will work or not. have you thought about using the ones from a 70 rallye 350? they are black in the opposite place as the 72 is. i will go out and see if a 72 will fit a 70 and report back.

just looked, they won't work. if i were you i would just paint the ones you have. i have painted a couple sets like the Rallye 350 and is not to hard to tape off. i figure taping them in the opposite way like the 72 would be easier.

Yeah I just repainted my 1972 bezels. The black was so worn and faded it didnt even look like they had been painted. Just take your time to mask them and spray them and they will look as good as new!

Great, thanks for taking the time to try it out. Any recommendations for paint that won't flake off or crack due to bugs, rain, wind, etc.?

the Rallye 350 has flat black but i don't know if that is what you want. i just used a good quality rattle can and has held up great. it may have ben better if i used an etching primer first but it has ben fine without it.

I have been using Krylon Rust Tough "semi-flat" for all of my OEM black finish needs. It seems to be holding up very well, and fairly cheap too, about $4 bucks a can at my local Advance. It is call semi-flat which describes it perfectly, not too flat, but not too gloss....just right. I have found that a lot of the over the counter semi-gloss's are too glossy. I didn't use any self etching primer on it, I just cleaned it real well, masked it off, scuffed up the bezel area to be painted, and let the paint fly. I don't even have them on the car yet, but a week after painting them, you can't scratch or even scuff them if you try. And I tried! I tried to dig my fingernail into it and no go. It is rock hard. And looks very good too.

X2 on the Krylon Semi Flat. I cleaned the bezels up with steel wool, taped the reveal off with 1/8" pin stripe, sprayed them. They turned out nice and seem to be durable.

I have been using the Krylon Semi Flat for other items on the car with good success as well. So, I will use it for the bezels as well.

we jeep inn: thanks for the pictures, that is the look I am going for.

I don't think the '71/2 headlight bezels will interchange with a '70 car. Just get a decent pair of '70 bezels and tape and shoot those. You won't even need primo pieces as long as the areas you leave exposed look decent. Anything under the black can have "bodywork" done to it, etc to make it look smooth.

The mounting screws on the '70 bezel go into the headlight housing at a different angle than the '71/2s and probably have different spacing on top of that.

People have also suggested using SEM's Trim Black paint on aluminum as it supposedly sticks well.

I did the blackout treatment on my first '70 442 (just the "inside" area like one of the bezels pic'd above) as well as some blackout work on the grilles (sprayed them from behind so there would be some aluminum look in certain areas as well as masking off the leading edges of the grille fronts). Don't know if I have any pics of it...other than the one after a lady in a Monte Carlo hit it head on when we had it parked in front of a buddies house....I'd have to try to get it scanned which I need to try getting done.
