Bumper

Has anyone ever had a bent bumper put back into shape? Do most of the plating shops handle this or do you need to go to a Frame straightening facility? Do you have problems with Fitting after it comes back? Are they any specific questions to ask when trying to find a reputable shop to do this work.

I am in the KC are if anyone has any suggestions.

The rechroming places here will straighten a bumper to an extent.

x2. Most replating firms can do a decent straightening job if the bumper isn't too bad. If you are worried, ask to see it before plating, and trial install it.

A friend of mine had his '70 front bumper straightened, but didn't test fit it before chroming. It was high in the center, and he busted part of the grille and/ or the "tooth" on the hood when closing it. Some guys like original parts, I'm going to go repro on my front bumper and save some $$$. You can buy new bumpers for the price most people want to rechrome yours. If it is bad then that's what I would do. If it is a small bend then the rechroming shop will do it.

The one thing I can tell you is it takes heat and a big hammer to straighten a bumper.

I've heard the repro's are thinner metal and not as rigid. Is there any truth in that.

I have front and rear repros. They are not as ridgid as original (you can not beat american made steel) , nor as straight , if I sight down the side of mine I can see alot of waves and they scratch pretty easy.
The less rigidity thing is not all bad though if you need to give it tweak here and there for a better fit.
I am guessing that the chrome would not hold up well if it was driven in the acid rain and snow. But I wont be doing that !!!!

couple palting places I know that could answer questions for you Bumperboys in California, tricities plating in TN, they might be abl eto give yo uan Idea on how much bend they can take out. Tricityplating.com, bumpperboys.com, advancedplating.com, chromeriteplaing.com. hope this helps. I just went to the Charlotte Auto fair a couple wekends ago I was looking into fixing my rear bumper it has a rust hole.
