72 mirror problem

Does any body know if the sport mirrors from 1970 differ from the 1971-1972 models. I bought a set off of E-Bay last fall and the drivers side is giving me issues.
When I do a side by side comparison of the two, the drivers side mirror base/stem is 1/8" longer than the passenger mirror, making the exterior gasket 1/8" short and it needs a different mounting bracket because of the length difference.
The passenger side is fine. The gasket fits and the mounting bracket is the right one.
I am wondering if I have a 1970 drivers side and a 1971/1972 passenger side. Can anyone shed some light on my quandry?
Oh and by the way, never by anything sight unseen. Thanks......Greg

Should be the same I think.........Sounds like you may have a later model 1973 and up mirror,Were they a matched set when you got them or were they diffrent colors or anything?

It was last fall, and as soon as I got them I sent them off to get painted because the car was geing prepped for paint. I am sure they aren't a matched set. Now the big question, how do I tell what year mirror I have on the drivers side?

The shape of the 1970 mirror is very different than the 1971-72. I think Jerr is on the right track for 1973 or newer. These sport mirrors were used on lots of different cars in the 1970's and the difference between the applications were the mounting stems. If your sure the pass side is right, I think you may want to look for a drivers side with the same hight, length and angle as the pass. The angle is the biggest difference I've seen in these as the shape of the door skin varied from car to car. Often the mirror will bolt up, but the bullet part of the assembly will be tilted instead of level.

Pictures may help us verify your problem, but it sounds like you probably need to replace the drivers side mirror. John

These are 1970 mirors. They will fit 71/72 doors but are incorrect for a restoration.

Right, the glass on a 70 mirror is rounder and the housing has sort of a clamshell edge instead of the more pointed type shape.
