'71-'72 OAI Hood

I looked at a 5-year old, repop OIA hood this evening. The seller recently bought a bunch of Olds parts from a guy who had sold his car and no longer wanted all the parts-n-pieces he had collected over the years. He said the hood was purchased from Tamraz back in 2009. I'm not really sure what to look for when evaluating the quality of these hoods. I ran my hand over all the surfaces and did not feel any significant waviness or high/low spots. The one thing that really caught my attention was the scoop openings. They were smooth up to the opening of the scoops and then changed to rough, unfinished fiberglass on the inside of the scoop. The other issue that I saw was the transition into the scoop was not the same for both scoops. I measured from the windshield end of the hood and the they measured the same on the top of the scoop, but the bottoms were not the same.

The man wants $500 for the hood, the chrome hood locks, core support brackets, and the wire screen that attaches to the underside. Is this a good deal? Are the imperfections easily fixed? What is the reputation of Tamraz's hoods? Thanks for the help, see the pics below.

Passenger's side scoop opening.

Driver's side scoop opening. Notice how the top and bottom of the scoop are not parallel.

That sounds like a good price to me, if the hood is a good quality. Sorry, I don't know anything about the Tamraz hoods. Something that I've read in other threads is that the cheapo hoods don't have the nuts for hood hinge bolts molded in well. So you might look at that area real close. The roughness could probably be smoothed over and painted to look good. Does it have an airbox to mate up to the air cleaner? How does the center hood latch area look?

The hood does have a functional air box and has metal reinforcement plates at the hinge mounts. I didn't think to look at the hood latch area. I believe it is a Glasstek hood which currently sells for $820 (including shipping) from Tamraz.

Should I steer clear of this hood or is the low price worth the extra work to fix the scoop openings?

That hood retailed for around 575.00 in 2009, so with the extras that he's throwing in and todays pricing? It's likely worth it IMO. The hoods from Tamraz are Glass Tek. Some are great, others are meh.

You could likely have the fibreglass issues fixed easily at a body shop. Take those pics to one and ask how much they would charge.

Low ball him at 350 and try to settle on 400. Even at 500 it seems to be a good deal! None of these hoods are perfect.

Bump good deal I agree give him your bottom price and have the 4 Benny's in your hand tell him that's all you have. The $300 saved will fix that hood up with a little left over to take your girl out to dinner. Bought mine new this year $700

Do you have any pictures of the bottom of the hood? I have a friend that has a hood that looks like a repro, but not sure.

Unless you're a body guy you are looking at 3 to 4 hours at $75 to $100 an hour to smooth out the inside of the scoops, if not longer as it is a tough area to get into. If you can get it for $400 and don't care about the rough openings - I say go for it..

I bought the hood!

I bought the OAI hood! I'm not sure if I should be excited or worried as I have no experience with these hoods. $500 was the agreed upon sum for the hood and delivery (it wouldn't fit in the back of my SUV); also included were some light-weight hood springs, and AC compressor link brackets I've been looking for. Biggest concerns are the scoop openings (of course) and it seems to have a bit more curve when compared to a steel hood. I'm not sure if it's gonna sit even with the fenders without a slight "hump" midway back. I guess I'll find out when I get the front clip on the car. Here's a big thank you to everyone for the info and suggestions.
