'69 fender emblems
'69 fender emblems
Ok all you 69ers. I'm considering replacing the pitted script and paint faded Cutlass S logo on my 69. For me it appears the only way to get to it is from the bottom by separating the fender from the chassis. Is there something I don't know to make the job easier?
Thanks,

Pretty tough to flex the bottom of the fender enough to get to the back of the emblem.
You might have a chance if you loosen the bolts in the cowl.
There's also a bolt in the hinge pillar above the top door hinge.
Also, you should pre-soak the bolts in the bottom of the fender, if you can get to them, with PB Baster or WD-40.
You actually need to get to the nut plates the bolts are in.
Usually the corrosion will cause the nut to break loose from the plate and you end up turning the nut and bolt.
Once you've let them soak, you might try very carefully to turn the bolts slowly
too see if you can avoid breaking the nut loose from the plate.
Patiently turning a few degrees back and forth sometimes helps.
If you're car has a "pampered" history, the corrosion on the bolts may be minimal and
you'll be able to back them right out. I've lucked out a few times that way.
But, most of the time, the corrosion makes it hard to not break the nut away from the plate.
Good luck.

I was able to get to the nuts on the 4-4-2 numbers on my '69 by separating the inner fender from the fender and going between them. It was a tight squeeze and it left marks on my arms for a couple of days but I was able to get it done...now I just have to put them back on...!

Will consider your suggestions, thanks. Got an aftermarket power antenna in from the bottom so I think I might be able to get my hand up again. I will look into the idea of separating the inner fender well as an alternative.
