1970 Cutlass Convertible

Is it normal for the hood on a convertible NOT to have the chrome strip down the middle?

Oh yes, definitely. Olds began not putting chrome strips down the middle of hoods back during the rule of Charlemagne in the early 800s. By 1070, that styling idea had run its course, and chrome strips returned to the middle of the hood. Actually, it would have happened earlier, but the Battle of Hastings in 1066 caused a four-year delay.

yes to Jaunty's reply, and the chrome strip was used for jousting...only knights with a death wish would charge toward their foes in a Cutlass w/o a chrome strip on the hood.

I am fairly sure it should have the chrome strip because any Cutlass Conv in 1970, except 442, would be a Supreme (even the SX) and would therefore have the chrome strip. The wagons and 4 doors I think used the same flat hood but no chrome strip. The non ram air doublehump metal hood was 442 and Cutlass S only and also had no chrome strip.

Again, I am fairly sure of this - hopefully an expert will chime in

Now you have me thinking. I bought a 1970 supreme convertible. it has the double hump hood. alot of the pics I"ve seen have the flat hood with chrome center strip yet others are just the "double hump".

As stated earlier, your car has a Cutlass S/base 442 hood, so it's been replaced at some point. The 1970 Supreme hardtops and convertibles should be flat with the chrome trim strip.

We all have a fat finger once in a while..... all fixed now

It never ceases to amaze me how many subtle differences Olds used with the different models in a single year. I'm still looking at hoods and wondering why this one came on that car, but if you had this other car it was a different one......
