After many years I finally decided to paint my 1987 442 street strip car. This car is anything but stock so I am taking some liberties with the paint scheme. This is a real VIN 9 442 but was repainted monotone after a theft recovery.


Here is a sneak peak at the car & the color scheme that will be used. Hope to have the car painted by Christmas. It will be burgundy & gold with styling cues from the 1973 & 1979 HO cars. I am stoked about having the car all finished.


This is how it has looked for the past couple of years. This car is a real VIN 9 442 but it was a theft recovery 15 years ago & got a crappy monotone repaint. I was never a fan of the factory paint scheme anyways so no loss.

This is how it looked this morning. This was a very low rust car with two thumb nail sized spots of rust in front of each rear wheel & some surface rust on the bottoms of the rear most door seams. Now 100% rust free.

This is a test panel sprayed in the original burgundy & the accent gold that I chose to go with it (not going back to the stock high low burgundy over silver that it left the factory wearing).

Fresh from the booth Sunday night. I am excited to see the car all back together. I have borrowed some styling cues from the 1979 HO & other Hurst Olds cars. The gold is not Firefrost Gold but is a tip of the hat to that Hurst connection.


We all know that there was not an HO in 1987 but had there been one it might have looked a little like this....

As I expected I am taking some sh*t from the G body purists who are mad that I "wrecked" a 1987 442 by not painting it back to stock. To me G body cars will never be collectible unless they are bone stock & a bone stock car just does not excite me. This car runs low 11s with Olds power & now it has the looks to match the performance & sound.

 

Its your ride. More people will like it than not. The most important thing is you like it. Post some pics when it's done.

Im not a fan of G bodys, but a G body made to go fast, and looks modified to go fast is pretty cool. I love the colors, very nice choice you made.

Nice: You're going to have to wear a safety harness to prevent you from falling into that paint! Nice and deep.

 

Shiny is faster, right? Looks like it's moving even when it's just standing. I remember seeing the prototype paint on the 83 H.O. And liked it better than what Hurst finally settled with. I still like the proto paint job better.

So where are the sponsor decals going?

 

"Olds Power by Joss" is in the back window & "Dyno Tuned by Joss" is on the rear side windows. Wayne Joss builds my engines & tunes them. No other sponsorship on this car. Joss Engines & Dyno services is out of Lethbridge AB.


This car is capable of some high 10 second passes @ sea level but it really is not a dedicated race car (note no roll bar). I chose to slow the car down & now it is very consistent 11.5X car that I can drive anywhere. I just wanted it to look as good as it drove. I have my 72 442 race car for when I want to run 10s.


Might add some pin stripes on the car & may do some checkered flag graphics on the cowl hood but not yet decided. If I do pinstripes I am leaning toward olive green. Will play with colors once I get the car back from the paint shop next week; there is still a lot of final assembly & detailing to perform.

Here are a couple more pics. My buddy that used to own this car (and now has my 1984 HO) has dubbed this car "A life-sized Hot Wheels car". I'll take that as a compliment.

The car is almost done. Painter is doing the final paint cut & polish then a full detailing on the car. I am away working until early March but will pick up the car when I get home. So looking forward to having it back.

Looks good! Must be pretty tight for clearance on the windshield to open the hood?

 

Not an issue. Hood opens all the way & is held up by a pushrod. Fiberglass cowl hoods are always tricky to fit & sometimes a compromise "best fit" is all you can manage. That is what we ended up with. All in all I am happy with the way the hood looks & fits.

Well I think it looks faster than it did. It will be faster since I took off five layers of paint and also removed the factory bumper mounts & replaced them with aluminum ones. I think the car is 100 lbs lighter which should be good for a 1/10th. Too bad I have no bar & can not run it flat out. It has been a best of 11.33 in Medicine Hat. I am willing to bet I can go 10.99 @ Mission but we know they will punt me after 1 pass for no bar. I am content to run the car in the 11.50 class & keep making 11.5x passes in the car.

 

as someone who does paint and body for a living, very nice work, love the paint scheme and man is that body straight! the fact that it is packing some real heat underhood is just icing on the cake. nice to see a race car look so clean. purists can go find their own to do stock if they care that much. dave.
