There are two premium tops brands that are way above the rest: Robbins and Electron. Use an authorized Electron dealer that supplies the parts and accessories, like pads. You should be out the door for $1500 to $2000. Do not cause yourself a warranty headache by trying to supply parts.

Convertible tops are perishable items. It would be more like buying a 25,000 mile tire that does not give you a smooth ride or good traction and braking versus buying a 60,000 mile tire that does. If you are going to keep the car, buying a premium top will save you money over time.
I suspect he is saying that is the price if you let the shop purchase the top and install it, not the price of the top assembly itself.
I put a top on my '69 a couple of years ago. I did my research and determined Electron was the way to go. I wanted a quality product and wasn't looking for the lowest cost option. When I talked to my installer, he told me he would only do the top if he could purchase it from Electron. He said 9 out of 10 people find low cost stuff on the internet and then bring it to an installer expecting great results. He said most don't fit right, wear early, all kinds of problems. He wouldn't do the install if I was looking to do it on the cheap.
Not saying you're trying to be cheap, but do a little research on Electron and other brands and you'll see why it's better to pony up for the better stuff.

I used convertible top guys. Wanted to buy a cheaper one and do it myself for the experience and their "full package" sounded appealing for that.
The top is "OK" but it's not show quality. Some imperfections, like a couple small scratches that won't come out. Also bought top cylinders and they sent me "big body Olds" cylinders instead of A-body. They sent new ones right out so that wasn't terrible.
One annoying thing - the package says it includes an installation manual but it's just a copy of a copy of the Fischer Body top manual. I had more luck watching youtube videos of top installers to get it done. Worked out OK though. Everyone compliments the final product, it doesn't leak, and it goes up and down fine.
