Window channel tape???

Window channel tape???
How much compression should this stuff have when installing? I picked up a piece to replace the 1/4 glass trim on a 98. The stuff is 3/64" and if I add the thickness of the tape on both side and the glass in the center its about .040 wider than the channel. The glass guy says it will be fine but I think he is just saying that since he does not have any 1/32" material.

Richard, I don't think the quarter glass is held by tape. AZ455 just did his on his 74 455 and it slid in friction fit. Have a look at his install. It should be the same for your 98 project https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...tml#post361152

I am not sure about the 98 but my 442 door glass was pressed into the lower channel with the glass setting tape. I got the correct size and needed 2 sets of hands and 4 of the woodworkers clamps to squeeze it together. not much room there so I would say it is important to have the right thickness tape.

Its not tape like sicky tape its called channel tape and installs friction fit. I my just tring to find one how much interference there should be. The stuff I got will have to be compressed to 1/2 its thickness once installed. I seems like a lot to me but I wanted see if anyone had the done it before.

Wow! Found it on the first search. Can you believe it? This is perfect for Richard - look at the vendors name and website. A PERFECT match

Don't think I'd need that much though. It's not that expensive but 20feet of that stuff for a job you only need 4ft for?

This kind of confirms my thoughts about size from that ebay listing
To determine the thickness you need, measure the width of glass, then the width of the channel that glass fits into. Subtract the width of glass from the width of channel and divide this figure by two. This will be tape thickness. For best results, the tape should be slightly larger than the gap. Tape comes in 20' rolls. All sizes are 1.5" wide. Check our store for additional sizes.

Alright all. I am reading through this thread. I know this tape is used to set the vent window glass, but can it also be used to set the main door glass. My door glass was loose in its channel. No mounting hardware with only glass, rubber and channel. I realize I am working on a 47yr old window assembly, but it sure looks like the rubber is an extruded seal with the same shape as the glass channel. I cannot seem to find this stuff anywhere. Any tips?

Yea, I read it. Hmmm. I am just trying to find out if the extruded rubber is available before I use the tape. They have the extruded stuff for the leading edge of the qtr glass chrome. Just maybe they have it for the door glass.

I had to re-set both side windows recently on my 66. I got a strip of the window setting tape from the local glass company. I took a channel and a piece of glass so they could give me the right thickness. They didn't even charge me for it. The guy with the know how told me to use a light machine oil (3-in-1) to coat the seal on both sides and the glass will slide in the channel much easier. Used a rubber mallet to drive the glass in to the channel. He was right! The oil also makes the rubber swell for a better seal. He warned me beforehand that it is VERY MESSY, you will want to wear nitrile gloves................. Trim the excess with a razor knife and it looks like it came from the factory.
