Looking for closeups, 72 cutlass, under front fender
Hello,
I'm looking to see if anyone has close ups of behind the front passenger fender where the fender mounts to the body? The other side is even worse. I'm looking to get an idea of how well it is sealed, what overlaps what, etc. Plenty of pics of cars with the fenders off, but I didn't yet find any close ups. Thanks all!
Behind wheel well, metal is missing near the bottom, not sure what it is supposed to look like. Under pass front fender. Metal is missing, not sure how it interacts with the mount for the fender.
Tim:
Great info. I have a '71 convertible, L Fr fender has a small ding by the headlight, and a bondo rust repair rear of the wheel well. Looking closer I discover that the fender is off a '70, so I'll be replacing it. Good to know what I'll be looking at underneath. I'm very impressed by your TIG welding work. I'll be referring back to your post when I go to repair repair a silver dollar sized rust bubble (yes, it'll be much bigger on the back side) on the RH side quarter panel immediately behind the wheel well. Thanks again!!!
The flat top fenders are sought after, make sure you keep it and I would think you could sell it here.
FWIW from my understanding some early 71 cars got some of the leftover flat top fenders.
As far as welding all those welds are mig welds and I am far from an expert.
Tim:
OK, will save it. My experience MIG welding was replacing cab corners and rockers on an '02 Silverado 3/4 Ton. Welds weren't pretty, but were functional, job turned out pretty darn good. While the truck bed was off I found some holes in the frame, oh boy...more welding experience. Fun stuff, love a challenge. I'll be at the Oldsmobile Homecoming next Saturday picking up more parts from Ron's Classic Cutlass. This guy has an incredible collection of stuff, it's expensive, but a fair price for what I'm getting, Beats shopping on FB Marketplace and driving all over heck to get good stuff that may turn out to be not so good. I'll gladly pay a premium for avoiding that headache any day.
