68 Cutlass doors....

Passenger side is very difficult to open from the outside, drivers side will not close correctly without a huge SLAM...Tips and ideas appreciated. Assuming the hinges should be replaced, how hard is it to adjust these big old heavy doors?
Thanks!

Did you install new rubber door bumpers?

As for difficult to open, do you mean binding linkages? If so, then a full internal lubrication is needed.
Lube door hinges and the latches, too.

When door is open and slowly pushed closed, does the door ride up on the striker? If so, hinge pins & bushings are probably worn. Lift up on the door when open. If it moves easily up & down, pin bushings are worn - replace them and pins before attempting any adjustment.

If the left door had the seal replaced, slamming will be normal for a few months. If not, does the door sit inside the quarter area? If so, the striker needs to be loosened and moved out. Are the rubber bumpers on the top and bottom of the door? IF so, they should be 3/8" long. If longer, they are incorrect and keeping door from closing right. If missing, get some .

This will at least get you started at the diagnosis...

How hard are they to adjust?...can be very hard if you don't know what you're doing.

Every adjustment effects another.
You have to think on many different levels and dimensions and become one with the door.
Really.

If it's got the right gaps and is even when it does close something else is wrong.

Rob pretty much covered it.

Just what I would of said.

Forgot this important tidbit:
If you do attempt hinge adjustment or pin/bushing replacement, cover the door edges and fender edges with masking take to prevent paint chips.

Thanks....

for the info and tips. The drivers door is a problem that has been getting progressivly worse. After I open the door, it "drops" a little so sounds like the hinge assemblies are the place to begin. The passenger door I am now thinking is the rods inside are not bent the way they should be as there seems to be no binding or obvious lube issues. When I get to replacing the hinges ( too cold out now to do much!!) does one install the new hinge on the door or the pillar to begin?
Thanks again!
