I don't know the for sure answer, but I've heard that typical older cars are 19 gauge (which is hard to find). Using 18 or 20 gauge should be ok. I'd use the thicker stuff for floor pans, rockers, etc. And the 20 gauge for fenders, doors, etc.

When I went out to buy some sheet metal recently, I passed on getting 18 gauge because it seemed too stiff for me to be able to shape it with the tools and experience I have.

Check out the metalmeet forum and maybe you can find the answer there.

Well I've only done a dozen or so tack welds with 20 gauge so far, but it seemed fairly easy once I got my welder set up properly.

I'm doing butt welds with it and it's ok, although I'm going for as little gap as possible. 1/16" or less gap is recommended for butt welds. I hear that some people put a piece of copper sheet behind the metal they're welding to prevent melting holes.

Also for butt welding, I've read that a common mistake is to hammerform the patch panel right after welding. It's best to grind off extra weld first, then whack it. Takes more time, but I can understand how that would bring better results.

Ok cool just got my mig today actually, its a chicago, but im young and cant afford the other stuff haha. Ive used their flux wire welders and i didnt have any problems. Im afraid to used flux on body panels though because it gets too hot and will most likely burn through. BTW about how much does it cost to fill a 20 cubic ft argon cylinder?

Oh don't worry, I'm 32 and I can't afford a lot of things I want. Seems the more money you make, the easier it is for that money to vanish into thin air.

So I'm guessing you got a gas mig instead of the flux core? Good move. Not sure about gas price. Just Google up a local supplier and give them a call. Seriously consider owning your own bottle... I passed on that and rented for years. Could've bought one a long time ago with that rental money.

Just took a look at your car pics. That's a sweet ride!
Good luck!
