1970 442 Sport Mirror mounting

I am retrofitting Sport Mirrors onto 1970 Cutlass Doors that had 1 std. Mirror from the factory (drivers side only). I'll be using mirror "support plates" (from Inline Tube) that fit inside the door skin to support the stresses of bolting Sport Mirrors onto the doors of the car. I have two questions.:
1) The Drivers door that I have did not have a Sport Mirror on it originally. It had just the standard single mirror on the door. I've heard that the "slots" in this door are the exact same size, spacing and shape as the slots used for a car built by Olds with Sport Mirrors. I was going to use this door as a "template" to cut the other Passenger door holes/slots. Is this correct?
2) Re: The mirror "support plates" from Inline Tube.: Do they need to be welded on (or epoxied on) or?? just "loose" between the mirror nuts and door skin? Inline Tube can't tell me which is correct and I don't know what would be best. I'm a little afraid of warping the mirror area of the door if I weld them in (even if I just partially puddle weld them in at 1 spot), but not sure what to do here? What do you think?
Any info. would be appreciated.
Thanks. Harold

yes just use the drivers side as a template for the passenger side. I would not weld the support brace in place - I can't remember if mine were welded from the factory or not but would not think you need to.
