1968 Cutlass Trim Removal

Hello,

I own a 1968 Cutlass S. I have the orginal trim still on it from the fenders and all the way to the back. I was wondering how these are removed without breaking them? I'm wanting to take them off so that I can strip the car down to bare metal as the paint has cracked from age as I believe this to be the second paint job on the car. Any ideas how these are removed? I noticed the fender moldings have bolts holding them. Also does the headlights need to be removed to remove the fender as I have rust on the passenger fender and would like to get it corrected without it on the car or is it better on the car? Also have the vinyl roof moldings as well. Is there a site to figure out what the orginal factory colors would of been? Thanks

First, if you don't already have them, a chassis service manual and a body sevrice manual would be good to have. The body service manual would be invaluable in showing you how to remove body panels. I wouldn't even attempt to do what you are proposing without having these available.

Second, if you post what's written on the body info tag, which is located on the driver's side of the firewall in the engine compartment usually just below the windshield wiper motor, several people on here will be able to decode it for you and tell you what the original colors were. It'll just be a series of letters and numbers in several rows. Write down everything you see and post it here in the order it appears on the tag.

I believe that's what it says on the cowl it's hard to read I had to use a pencil to get those numbers I know the top is correct and the paint numbers are but the others not 100% Thanks

Thanks. I don't have the code books, so I can't decipher this, but others have on here, and I'm sure they'll check in with data for you.

I can say that, in your second line, that ST-6S should be ST-68, as the 68 is the year of your car. Also, the 07E indicates that your car was built in the 5th of week of July, and I'm assuming that would be July 1968, which would make it a very late in the model year car.

Unless it means July 1967, which means it was built very early in the model year. I don't know how early in 1967 production switched to the '68s. Late July/early August seems about right. Again, I'm guessing others on here will know.

I was able to clean it up a bit and got better numbers and letters. I believe this is what shows on the cowl..

Get a Fisher Body manual.

It shows all the trim mounting, window adjustments, interior, etc.
