Cam Options for 1969 400cu in

So I am getting ready to order the motor overhaul parts and when it comes to the cam I had a couple of questions.

First, the car is a factory AC and PB car but, I would like to know how aggressive can I go with the cam?

Will too an aggressive cam hurt vacuum supply to brake booster?

Factor cam is the easy choice but, considering I am getting the motor completely overhauled it would be nice to see if I can get a couple extra HP while I am at it.

Assumptions: .030" over, decked block and heads and possible port and polishing of heads.

Any input?

Sean

Yes too much cam will leave too little vacuum for the brakes but it will also run like crap if it is not matched to other components. Need more info.

What trans?
What converter (if auto)?
what gear ratio?
What compression?
What rear tire height?

figure all those things out BEFORE you select your cam.

Dave,

Since it is a bit of a Chicken and Egg scenario I will go with the following additional assumptions:

2500RPM Stall
3.91:1 ratio rear
255/60/14
target comp ratio of 10-10.5:1

Does this help at all?

No one makes a 255 60 14 tire. Did you mean 245 60 14 or 255 60 15?

With the above info the experienced engine builders will now have a better understanding of the rest of the drivetrain package & can suggest suitable cams. Good luck with the build.

I'd go 239/244 @.050 and .541/.544 lift on a 110. Its a Bullet grind. Plenty of vacuum for your brakes. Decent idle if you set it up right with carb and timing modifications.

The tires were wrong after I hit submit. The tires are going to be most likely 225/70/14.

The intake and exhaust manifold will be stock but with a set of 2.5" Pypes.
