Rusty engine parts (what to do)

I have a 455 (apart) that has surface rust on the cam and crank
new cam and turned crank . I want to remove rust(dont think there is any pitting) and continue to store them till ready to put together . should I let the machine shop check them ? I have coated cranks with axle grease in the past ?
what works for you ?

Many will say no. But...... I'de do just the same. Ditch the cam-break in is hard enough with a new cam let alone a rusty one- Dust off the crank oil it and use it later. Unless going for big power, power adder or high rpm use. besides if the cam is an old one, there are much better profiles available now.

It would be your best choice.
