60 olds 394 dual exhaust
Hello I have a 1960 olds super 88 coupe,I wish to install dual exhaust on the car I already have the left hand side dual exhaust manifold. But I am having a difficult time finding pictures or diagrams of how the dual exhaust pipes run from the manifolds to the tailpipes. I have tried some local muffler shops and have had no luck. I need HELP.
Thank you
Bill

Hi Bill,
Well this will be interesting as I am going from single to twin as well. I've seen one post that mentions a block off plate so I'm going outside to have a closer look at the manifold set-up to see what the go is.
Good luck with yours.
John.

Hi John,
the block off plate you mention is fairly simple. On the single exhaust system if you follow the exhaust pipe from the driver,s side exhaust manifold you will find that it connects to the bottom of the passenger side or the right hand side manifold. You can either but or make a plate to block this off. I found that it was a little difficult ,however to locate the proper dual exhaust manifold for the driver,s side or the left hand side of the engine. Also the factory calls for no gasket between the exhaust manifold and the head therefore you should insure the exhaust manifold is decked or machine flat. That being said I have however found that exhaust manifold gaskets are available.
Good luck with your project.

Hi guys,
I'm not really current on all of the Olds stuff, But I have come across one of these elusive left hand factory dual exhaut manifolds. Its the one that exits out the back... Do you guys know how much its worth and do you have any resources for people looking to buy one? i'm sure you guys know more people that might be looking for this.
I have pics I can email if you would like.
tyson.chaplin@gmail.com
I'm willing to ship around the country if needed. Thanks guys for your help

Having managed a exhaust shop, I'm well aware of most loosing their abilities of intricate bending and/or using their imagination!
There was a book with complete sketches of exhaust systems going back to the mid-50's, only 5 years ago, by Goerlich, and came up to current years.
I had a computer disc.
Call around and ask independant shops if they have 'bending cards' and someone who knows how to use them.

Hello, I reproduce the exhaust Manifold block off plates for the 56-64 Oldsmobile 324 371 and 394 engines. I have both regular mild steel and Stainless ericsolds@sbcglobal.net

Re: 1960 olds 394 DUAL EXHAUST
Hello Everybody thankyou for the info on the conversion to dual exhaust, however I am still requiring some information. The left hand side exhaust manifold I have found two types, one dumps downward and little closer to the front of the engine than the stock single exhaust manifold and then one I just purchased from Tyson that dumps at the rear of the engine towards the rear of the car. If I could Just locate some pictures or diagrams of how the exhaust should run it would sure help.

I'm not sure how things are on a '60 but on the '61's the left hand manifold is the same for single or dual.
Below is a picture of a '61 with duals. The left side is pretty tricky. It's so tight of a bend that there needs to be a cut/union just aft of the starter.
My '61 originally had single exhaust. I did the block off plate on the right side then ordered the left side pipes from http://www.waldronexhaust.com/. All their bends were right on.

Thank you to all of you for trying to assist me, how ever I am still looking for a diagram or photo of the dual exhaust set up for a 1960 Olds 394 Super 88 Senic Coupe. The 1961 0lds from what I understand is a different style of frame and the left hand side exhaust manifold is also different. I am guessing that only 1959 and 1960 are the same.

I'll check some of my manuals to see if I can find a picture.
In the mean time here's a couple good discussions talking about the manifolds and other's experiences trying to go dual on the '59-'60:

Tell me that all those parts are inside your house and thats not a fancy room in your garage, love to show the wife and tell her that its a world wide guy thing to keep car bits in the house.
You have put a lot of work in there getting that gear ready, impressive.

Looks like I'll go Waldrons for an old original system. They can send me what I want here to Australia and I can bolt it up myself. Does anyone have video - YouTube links to a Waldron system in action. Like to see/hear what I am getting. I have tried YouTube but can only get Mystangs, Corvettes, camero, GTO. Large Olds with the system would be great.

On my '61 I went from single to duals. Basically I got all the pipes for the left hand side--the right hand single side pipes were in good shape. I was able to find an NOS GM resonator and muffler (rear) for both sides.
Strange side note here, on the '61's the right side pipes are larger than the left side pipes. This is from the manifold all the way to the little turn down tips on the stock mufflers. Something like 2-1/8" right and 2" left if I recall. Right side got the larger diameter no matter if it's single or dual.

KANTER PRODUCTS HAVE ALL PREFAB EXHAUST SYSTEMS FOR THE 59 and 60 dual system,it all bolts right on. and that blocking cap you need, you can make it your self . you can use your old flange to trace one out. save your money.both pipes go threw the frame just like the 59.

I didn't know that someone made full exhaust systems for the full sized olds cars. I want to get one for my 62 starfire. I never heard of Waldrons before but seems like the place I need to order from. What kind of muffler did you pick out 426 Hemi for you 61 olds?

Waldron told me that I would have to buy a new heat riser to go onto my car, that they didn't sell it and I'd have to buy it elsewhere, and that the exhaust system they were willing to sell me REQUIRED that I have the OEM heat riser in place.
I asked Waldron if they could make the exhaust pipe that connects to the left header 0.650" longer because I did not want a heat riser on my car. I was unwilling to pay an extra $100 for a part that I didn't even want on my car. Here was their response:
Hello Bob,
Waldron's will not be able to assist you with any pipes other than pipes
built to the OE specs. We wish you luck in your quest.

Hummm someone actually took their heat riser (in your case maybe you can do what is left of it) and had a spacer just machined out of a block of stock. I know they make chevy heat riser spacers, but I don't know if they would fit. They look close though.
#27
Yes, I guess that custom fabricating a spacer would be an option, but I was thinking that the machine work would cost as much if not more than buying a replacement heat riser. Maybe the cheapest spacer option would be to have someone weld up the two pieces that are left of my heat riser to make a spacer out of it.
#29
I'm not concerned about driving my Super 88 in cold weather. I have a 4x4 truck for the winter. For me, the heat riser is an original part that causes more trouble than it's worth. It's probably the one part on my car that would elicit a "to hell with originality" response from me. I'm beginning to think that my best option is going to be to go without the riser or any kind of spacer, cut the pipe, and weld a connector on the pipe to make it longer.
