Post 455 - oil pump primer

Hello to all - I have a 1970 455 block which has never been started since being rebuilt. I am looking for an oil pump primer kit that will prime the oil pump and bottom end but also the lifter & rocker assemblies. They also come with a collar which eliminates any wobble when rotating the shaft.

I find numerous 'GM small & big block' kits but none that specifically reference an Oldsmobile block.

I have (2) questions:
  • Will the 'GM' kits fit an Olds big block?
  • The attached drill is rotated 'conter-clockwise' - Yes
I am a bit lite on experience here & would appreciate any assistance - many Thanks!

Well if you have an extra dist that you could take apart you could use it with a drill and that will prime your oil pump and all.

Hi Will, If your pressure went to 60, the NAPA tool must have the collar attachment included. Was the tool specific to Olds or just GM. Thanks for the feedback

True, but I do not think the oil pressure will ever build up with just the distributor- correct? I'm trying to verify / pre-test that also. Thanks for the feedback

If you take the distributor apart and use the shaft with a drill it will raise the oil pressure at least that's what we did with my friends small block chevy.

5/16 socket on a long extension should do it. Make sure the socket doesn't come off

I duct tape a deep well socket to an extension, so the parts are big enough that they probably can't get lost even if the tape fails. I use a 1/4" drive ratchet to turn the 5/16" shaft counterclockwise. That gets the oil into the passages just fine, and you can hear and feel when they are full. I like to put moly cam lube on the rocker wear points, and put each lifter in a spray can lid full of oil, then depress the plunger a few times to get oil inside.

I just did this last night on my 1970 455 engine I sat into my car. It worked great. Now I'll feel a little better when I fire it up with the new cam and new upper assembly I just installed.
