locked distributors

Anyone here run a locked distributor or one where the mechanical advance has been altered? I ran a points unit with pertronix innards for years till I came upon this thread in ROP. I tried it and wow, what a difference. So much more low end performance,no pinging on the top end because the total advance is maybe 12 degrees. You can run a lot more initial advance, making for much more low end power and better idle.Give it a shot.

Before my MSD billt distributor,I ran an HEI that had the weights welded.then I went to the MSD & locked it.I set my total advance at 3,000rpm & leave it.I run a 6AL box and a an MSD timing computer, for the start retard option. It retards the timing while starting,to allow the engine to crank over easier. Now that I have the EFI,I still have the same locked MSD distributor, the same 6AL box,but the start/retard function is now part of the EFI computer.

Nice setup. I also run the 6al of the mallory persuasion, car starts up cold and runs 50 times better then with the old pertronix hooked up to a msd coil. The pertronix is a fine pickup though, nice and steady.Smart idea running the start retard,I don't run a locked unit, just severely limited mechanical andance with a lot more initial and no vacuum advance. If I do lock it someday I will certainly get that retard unit. Thanks. Jeremy
