Help to build my 400 engine
Hello, I own a 1966 442 with 400 engine and manual trans.
I already build my engine 2 times, and the 2 times is ruinned because of oil pressure problems. I really dont know what im doing wrong.
I think the 2 time I build the engine I leave main clearances to tight .0015, I dont know if this can affect oil pressure.
I was also having another problem, the cylinder heads are being flooded with oil, and I was usin oil restrictors from mondello and restricted pushrods.
So now I buy a compleete rotate assembly kit from oldsperformance products (Andy Miller) And now I will start to build the engine again, but I will like all of your advices, on main and rod clearances, piston clearances, piston clearances, torques, timming, etc and any other information to prevent another disaster
thank you

It is hard to say what your problem is/was. It is very hard to say as well in a forum like this. .0015 is the minimum clearance on the mains except for #5 which needs more clearance. I do not think that was your problem. Get the factory shop manual and it gives all specs that should be used for rebuilding. Maybe some things such as oil pan, pump pickup, etc led to your oiling problems. Too much oil to the heads may be due to too much pressure.... I would say to rebuild it stock with factory specs and you should not have a problem. Make sure too all oil gally plugs are instaled. Some are located behind a cap. Sometimes these are forgotten.

Now Andy Miller recommend me to have minimum of .0035 clearances on Main Rods.
I install a new 7qt oil pan, new High Volume, High Pressure oil pump

Didn't you post this once before?
First things first, make sure the line bores, cylinder bores, rod big end and small ends, pin fit in pistons etc is checked. Make sure oil galleys etc are clean and free of debris. Leave nothing to chance, then go from there.
Until you do all that you'll probably still have problems no matter who's parts you're using.

It was my understanding an Olds motor does not need the 'high-volume' pump, and only the 'high-pressure' pump if opening clearances.
Under 6000 rpm on a mild rebuild, stock pump should be fine.
This was per Rocket Racing last year.
