455 Build Up

455 Build Up

I got a 455 BB engine and looking to build it up. It is going to be a street application but I want it to be ridiculous powerful. Im NOT going to run nitrous on it. In the future I plan on supercharging it. Anyway, I was considering boring it out. Whats the maximum size and overall cubic inches I can achieve safely and thats reliable? I was looking at the Edelbrock Performer kit, (includes carb, intake manifold, cam, exhaust headers) has anyone had this on there setup and wanted to know how you felt about it. As for the rest of it for now, im looking at a msd ignition system, new radiator/fans. Any other recommendations to consider? This is my 1st major buildup and Im wanting to do it right the 1st time and have a reliable motor in the end. So all input is welcome. Oh, by the way it is going into a 85' 2dr cutlass.

IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!!! A stock 455 will boil the tires in a G body....other than careful assembly with right clearances, anything but 'J' heads, and a mild cam.....a edlbrock manifold a set of headers and someone to set up your Q-jet...good to go....I had a 71 455 2bbl out of a Delta,mild cam about .500 with 290 or so duration aluminum intake and headers (stock rockers shimmed) ....after a guy set up the carb and hei it was installed in my 78 LeMans and a 8.5 3.08 rear with turbo 400......super fun on street and 22mpg......VERY low buck...don't over build for a street car...you'll be chasing each change forever and spend too much money...just my aged but humble bit of wit

haha nice, do you know of any good fan setups or radiator to use for it, for it having the motor with edelbrock package and then one day doing a supercharger on it

I'm hoping 70Wcars (Dan S) chimes in here. He's running a cast iron head, Q-Jetted 455 into the mid 11s. Just a cheater cam and goooooooood driving!

HEy, ive got a 71 cutlass with a 455, it currently has a high performance carb used to 1/4 mile racing. Whats a good carb that will get me better mpg? this carb is a hog right now. Thanks everyone.

Don't know about the driving part... Attention to detail upon assembly never hurt..The Eldo. pkg. is a fairly balanced approach, but I am not a huge fan of their carbs. Hey Kylem 4711...Q-jet properly set up will give great mpg and run well enough to propel a car into the 10's...biggest two factors impacting fuel milage are rear-end gear ratio and judicous application of the right foot.

so your saying its not better to get a new carb for better mpg? i could probably sell the one on it for 400-500

Not at all...I am saying the Q-jet will give you better mpg. as well as great perf. Just keep in mind that your gas mileage will be impacted by the 3.73 gears...If you go to the Q-jet, post some cam specs as some special tuning may be in order...let me know if I can help further.
