My friend has a couple of the 65-67 big block crankshafts he is planning to sell. Both are standard size. What is a reasonable price for them these days?

 

Hey geardoc66, the 1965-67 Olds 400 and 425 use the exact same forged steel crankshaft (3.975" stroke, part numbers like 384722 or 390370). The only difference between the two engines is bore size and pistons — the cranks are fully interchangeable. These early forged cranks are desirable because they're stronger than the later cast 455-style ones. For a standard journal crank in good shape (needing only a polish or minor cleanup), a fair market price right now seems to be in the $250–$400 range depending on condition and location. Have your friend measure the journals to confirm they're truly standard size and snap a few clear photos of the casting numbers and rear flange. That'll help it sell quicker to someone building a numbers-matching or high-performance motor.

 

Depends on how bad you need it . I would take it straight to a machine shop that can magnaflux it.
