My 455 in my 57 Olds with the turbo 400 gets 50 grins per mile average and when I step on it goes up to 100 per mile. I'm one of those who cares with the Olds.

I don't dare actually calculating my MPG. But it's somewhere in the 5 to 8 range.
I try to go with the smile per hour rating myself as well.
Then again there is also the "stiffie" factor when punching it.

Lady got a 19.8 average on her 1700 mile trip from South Carolina to Dallas TX. This included the Smoky Mtns and Blue Ridge Pkwy with an elevation of 6000'+. I was easy on the gas pedal for the most part but I was cruising 80+ through the TX flatlands.
Not bad at all IMHO...
She has a stock 350 & TH350, with 2:73 rear.

Well you have to keep your foot out of it to achieve those higher numbers.

That sounds about right. I think when I checked mine it was around 8. But I was uncharacteristcally enthusiastic during that tankful.

69 442 mileage

When I drove from my place to London , Ont. for the Olds Show Aug.7/09,I thot I might have to take along a 5-gal. can of gas "just in case". I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite driving at 70-80 mph, I got a respectable 15-17 mpg! Car has a 3.08 or 3.23 rear end[est. on wheel/axle turns] but the large rear boots probably helped a lot.Derek

I say it's pretty amazing you found this 6 year old thread, considering how this sites search feature works. That car has since been rebuilt btw. Probably does even better now.

... And considering that there was another, much longer, "MPG" thread started and finished in the intervening time, I think about 2 years ago.

I recently was parked next to a New Fiat (at a Car Show, would you believe ?), and there were several people looking at his new car.One ask him about gas mileage and he proudly said 36 mpg.I got several laughs when I spoke up and said mine got 32mpg. Yeah 16 coming here and 16 going back! But I would still rather have my car than his! Mine was built in the good old USA. Larry

I tried to measure it once and did about 8 mpg, I figured if I need to worry I shouldn't be driving it. Though I swear when I was younger driving a '76 98 with a 455 I got 18 mpg from Chicago to Orlando and back.

I get 8 to 10 with about 80% of the time at WOT. No idea what it would get with light throttle for a full tank as I just can't do that.

I usually do not worry about the olds mileage but I do have a idea guys of it. light traffic 13 heavy about 11. highway with a 3.42 and overdrive 17 to 20. I REALLY THOUGHT FROM THE BEGINING THAT THE DIRTIER CAM WAS GOING TO BE BAD ON GAS BUT I WAS WRONG. I WILL NOT THOUGH UNLESS I AM CAUGHT OF GUARD WILL EVER DO A 290 EXPRESWAY SCENE AT ALL THAT BUMPER TO BUMPER FOR HRS IS RIDICOULOUS. MY DAD HAD A 455 OLDS ALSO AND USED TO WATCH HIS GAS GAUGE MOVE WHEN SITTING FOR ABOUT 15 TO 30 MINUTES. I would rather be cautious then stupid and avoid it as much as possible. I also like to when there is no one around except fields really jack the speed up. you can have the best of both worlds if careful.

I get about 19-20 in the turnpike cruiser, and about 16 in the 442 convertible it has 3:08 gears with a th400 and that is not getting on it.

But, to be honest I don't care. I have put maybe 8 tanks of gas all year through the two combined.

Agreed. When I drive it a LOT it gets maybe 4500 miles a year so I don't even worry about mileage.

I'm HOPING for 8 combined. The 455 has been... modified slightly. Used to be 10 city and 16 highway IF you drove with an eggshell under your foot. The engine was rebuilt a few years ago and given a healthy dose of new horses. Got my fingers crossed that the original Muncie HD 3 speed (M15) will handle the load.

This one gets between 6-7 miles per gallon depending on mood fluctuation. I'm going to collectively calculate the average of the olds, the wife's import and my safari van to see what average per gallon is for my household.

My 70 442 was lucky to get low teens. My '66 Toronado one time got 15MPG on a long, slow trip. Typically about 12.
