495 stroker motor back from speedshop!

Thought i'd give a update. Thanks for the recommendations on Mann speedshop! Dana is a great guy. My shortblock came home last week. Ready for paint. Everything balanced, honed, etc with studs and straps on the low end. My edelbrock heads are at Nolands heads and are ported and getting assembled this week. Should flow about 275cfm.. Air gap intake getting port matched, and headers getting ready for coating. Mark set me up with a Lunati custom grind roller with 243/249 at .050 and 589/597 lift on a 112 lobe. Compression should be close to 10.25 to 1. Gonna be a fun ride. Hopefully i can take my cousins 427 fairlane and my dad's 426 hemi challenger! It's fun to have a car family. Pics below

The next task is getting all the power to the ground.

I would love to dyno at some point. Keeping power to the ground will be a good problem ☺

That thing is going to be a STUMP puller. My dyno shop charged me $500 to set it up (which is time consuming due to the BOP bolt pattern) break in the cam, change jets twice and make 3 pulls. I had never dyno'd an engine before, it was VERY nerve wracking listening to the 507" Cadillac rpm up to 5200 but then again it was fun and satisfying with the results. If you can swing it, DO IT!!! ...... by the way your timing and fuel curve is all set when you take it home.

I’m very interested to see how this performs. Will you be taking this to the track? I will be “freshening” the 455 in my car this winter and I’m looking at my options. Keep us updated on how it runs.

Yes I agree....but to each his own. Actually I think a Quick Fuel SS 850 would really work great. Also, why do the Edelbrock and Procomp alum. heads hang over the ends of the block so much. It is because they are in fact aluminum and need to be thicker as opposed to the cast iron heads?

Hi Dave, nice to see to see this come together. Looking forward to any updates. A couple of questions, what fuel pump and water pump are you using?

No matter how good of a deal you got, you still have to buy 2 carbs now. A QF SS 850, nothing less, and cut the center divider down at least an inch as well.
And spend $200 on a wideband and tune it right.

The reason Mark said this and I agree, alot of cars running bad on this site stem from an Edelbrock carb being installed and sometimes many man hours spent and still run the same. Plus your motor will need a lot of carb.

What fuel pump is that?

Did you have to clearance the head to get it to fit?

Typically no clearance problems with a big block, only small blocks.

Two things. Compare old genuine Carter versus new Edelbrocks. Althought "same", totally different. Genuine Carters have way better castings. Worth of many hours to get new Edelbrock to same, and you Still cant get it to same, since theres some minor differences on casting moulds.

I know- i bought new Edelbrock- its now up for sale locally. And im refurbishing old genuine Carters. Its a night and day difference. I spend alot of time with new Edelbrock to smooth it out, and after buying old genuine Carter, i wasnt even there where the original castings were. Just FYI.

Just make sure it has clearance next to the head. I did a little clearance, just so it was not touching. I figure a small gap is good, so you don't get heat transfer onto the fuel pump. JMO

Ok. Funny how i was told unless you like working on a carb like a holly all the time ( which guys i know do ) lol, to throw a edelbrock on it and forget it. I figured 800 chm was borderline but would be ok. Thanks for tip on fuel pump clearance. I'll double check it out.

Couldn’t be farther from the truth. That Edelbrock carb was probably the worst one you could’ve bought.
Besides being a less than stellar carb, you have 495 ci with an intake that has a small plenum. It would easily take a 950.
But the cut the center divider down at least an inch and get a QF SS 850. They’re really about 870-880 and the best you can get for the money.

This would explain a lot, probably the real problem ones probably have even more casting flaws. I see Edelbrock changed the booster to annualer on the new AVS 2. Probably won't help a lot, unless they improved the castings as well.

I have one of those fuel pumps but have never used it. If it will feed your motor, mine will be no problem. The old Holley's always had better full throttle than the stock Qjets but always seemed to have running issues. These new Quickfuel carbs are more tunable and seem to actually hold a tune and run the way they should for a good price.

Update

Sent the edelbrock carb back. Won't make that mistake again! lol. I do plan on doing a fair amount of street racing. I'm gonna go with a quickfuel. ss850 or what model if i want to bump to the 950? The intake is port matched fyi. Builder spent a few hours on it to make it breathe as good as the heads. Rocker arms and pushrods installed. Motor primed. getting closer. Will post pics soon.

No it was a timing issue. He already had it sealed and torqued down . I have tried to follow all your recommendations. Don't know if their will be room but we could add a spacer depending clearance.

Hmmm so he spent time port matching it but not cutting the divider....
You probably won't have the clearance without using a significant drop base air cleaner, which is counterproductive anyway. Then I'd use a 950 then.

Street racing huh? stupid, stupid and extremely dangerous for the poor guy or family that gets T boned by people like you. Obviously I am TOTALLY against street racing and have seen the aftermath too many times of tragic accidents due to it. I truly hope this forum doesn't condone this activity in any way shape or form.

No, we just had everything in our shop to start it out of the car so we did. Will go in car this weekend hopefully. I've been told it's around $900 to have one dyno'd local. I need that for exhaust.
