394 carb swap - Qjet??
394 carb swap - Qjet??
Hi
I am well aware of my 64/98 is equiped with a 4GC, and I am aware of the "joy" if not carefull with the TV/transmission linkage , but are considering a carb swap, maybe a Qjet. I havent desided anything yet, but know that the Qjet is a popular carb, and set up well, can compeed with the newer carbs, as I understand it (Price taken in consideration too). I do know a few in here have changed to Edelbrock, with succes.
Have a Qjet swap been done before of your knowledge??
Will it be trouble, to go spread bore carb to square bore manifold via adaptor? Turbulens perhaps??

I've never been a fan of the spreadbore-to-squarebore adapters. The flow disruption just seems excessive. This is one case where I'd suggest an E-brock over the Qjet. The E-brock bolts up to the stock intake, and you can probably cobble linkage for the TV rod. I've done exactly this on the 215 in my 62 F-85.
Another carb to consider is the dual pattern, square or spreadbore Street Demon 625 or 750 cfm. It is a new castings 3 barrel design based of the Carter Thermoquad. It will need a spacer on a stock 4 hole intake but is much more sophisticated than the AFB(Edelbrock).
I see.... I understand Joe, thanks
Thanks 307/403. Interesting, although I am do not know much about carburetor, how and why they act together with a specific motor, but still interesting.
I will consult my carburetor guy, and do some thinking...

How bad is this flow disruption on a stock engine?
I am a Qjet guy and would really like to see a Qjet instead of an Edelbrock on this 394.
If the disturbance in flow is bad enough, that it is best to advice against the Qjet/adapter-deal, then what size Edelbrock would go best for a 394?
IF one wanted to have the excellent throttle response and mileage, you get with the Qjet, I guess a carb with that small of a primary bore would be needed. From what I know, the 600 cfm Edelbrock ( 1405 ) has a primary bore of 1 7/16, where the 750 cfm Qjet has a primary bore of 1 3/32.
