Can you turn the motor? Has it been previously rebuilt?

I wouldn't pay more than $147.86 for a non running incomplete engine. IMO I would price it as a block. Would be different if it was a runner and complete. To me there's far less value the way it is regardless what car it came from. I would guess you're planning to put new crank, heads, oil pan/pump, intake, carb, pistons and connecting rods to say the least?

G block 400 motors are harder to find than 455's. For a complete motor that's a solid rebuildable core, correct numbered bolt on's for a 1969 442, I'd have no problem going $500.

$50-150 if I'm buying it
$500 if I'm selling it.

Id offer $300 if it has heads with it. $100-$200 without heads depending on condition
You dont wanna low-ball the guy and aggrivate him. Olds stuff is already cheap enough as it is lol

Understood, but John? It's not complete according to the OPs comments. And it doesn't run - don't even know if it might be seized. On that basis you still want to offer 500.00 for what might be a boat anchor? That was the basis of my earlier post....

Vega, see above. But I do agree that the buy/sell aspect is to avoid aggravation during the negotiations. I just would have a really hard time offering 300 on a non running questionable engine. G block or not.

If its not the original engine for your car... then why go to the trouble and expense of building the 400 block?

You have a lot more power potential out of one of the 455s that you already have...

Visually they are the same at a glance until someone starts checking numbers... which if someone wanted to get into it, would reveal the vin & application stamping doesn't match... so really what was the point of it?

Plus, you already have the 455... Money saved right off the top.

All good & valid points, the whole reason of why i posted. I inspected the engine today & picked it up for $200.00. The heads were off which helped with inspection & the cylinders looked very clean & uniform, along with the crank & all so i went for it. My reasoning for what i will say is an investment was for purely resale value, although its not numbers matching it might help to pull a couple more bills out of her when that time comes. As blu mentioned they are getting more harder to find & although its not the most desirable engine it still has its place in history & thats why i got it. It will also provide a backup engine if i ever get crazy & blow away a few chevelles in the time i have it. Thanks all i appreciate all the inputs & welcome more as well, not all will agree with what i do but its the love of the hobby that i enjoy the most....after all isnt why we do it? Good day!

Glad you're happy with the purchase. Like you say - maybe some day. I myself probably wouldn't have bought it, but mostly because of space right now. Good luck with the rebuild!
