Timing Cover Repair

Has anyone here tried repairing timing covers on a big block? I found some spot corrosion while doing the water pump and wonder if I could blast it and braze it or spot weld or maybe even POR-15? I know they're available from Dick Miller racing, I'm just hoping there's a budget fix someone has tried. Thanks!

Brazing would be my choice, no reason it cannot be repaired.

If you already have the material to fix it, that would be they way I would go. I know that other places like OPG sell new covers, and they are not terrible expensive.

After you repair it, do not be afraid to primer, then paint the timing cover, before you bolt on the water pump.
Any paint that sticks, will add a bunch of corrosion resistance.

The covers are the same from 1964-1990. I believe the 307 covers may even still be available from the GM parts system.

I was surprised to learn that they're still available from GM, although the part has been discontinued. I ordered a new one to have when I rebuild my original motor someday, and will try some sort of remedy on the one that's currently on the block.

So I picked up the new timing cover today, but now need to find the right gasket to seal up the timing chain, oil seal for the balancer and lower seal for the oil pan. Any ideas??? Thanks as usual for the help!

FelPro TCS45270 if you need the repair sleeve for the balancer or FelPro TCS13417 if you don't.

Depending on the damage, I am betting JB Weld will fix it. Okay, some of you guys can go ahead and take your shots at me. It is great stuff.

Do you know the GM part number, I'm about to put a pitted one back on my rebuilt engine but if there is a new GM one available I would go that route?

I'll post the number when I get home later on... the local Chevy dealer got it overnight from L.A. for me. It's $60 for just the cover, I found the gasket/seal kit at NAPA for $12.

I love JB weld too, and once used it to fix a pinhole leak in a swimming pool filter!

10 years ago, I shot a pinion gear tooth through the bottom of my housing, and JB welded it. Still doesn't leak.

McIlroy, The part number for the Timing Cover is 22525282 (cover assembly), and cost $61.00.
NAPA has the gasket set for another $12, it's FPG TCS 13417. Good luck with your build.

I would not go that far, with JB weld.
Do not be like my father, who used it to set a tooth in my pissed off mother's dentures.
It did not hold it, either.

Never tried it on dentures, but did use it to repair a cylinder wall in a 215 Olds.

I think it's time for a separate thread on JB Weld! (aka liquid duct tape)
