Hey gang,
I'm installing a 455 in a 56 studebaker goldenhawk. Ive got the motor at the shop this winter and, full disclosure, im new to olds 455s.
I'm putting new gauges in the hawk so when it comes to the temp gauge I can go either way, mechanical or electric. Which sender is original to the 455? Mechanical or electrical? And where is the sender installed? I don't recall seeing it on the intake manifold.
Most cars had an idiot light, not a gauge. The port for the sending unit (for either gauge or idiot light) is on the drivers side of the thermostat housing, at the front of the intake manifold.
This is an aftermarket manifold but has the locations of the factory ports identified:
Cars within which 455s were originally installed were typically electric to my knowledge - Since you're installing new gauges, you can do electric or mechanical, or a combination of both if either are available within the same series of gauges you're installing.
A mechanical water temp gauge might be the better choice for reliability - i.e. direct temp reading vs. electrical signal.
