Springs on 455 4bl? Correct or not

Does anyone know if this looks correct? These are pics of of the left side of my 4bl carburetor. The rear one (pic 1) seems correct, but the spring in Pic #2 seems to me to be added for some reason? Also seems very stiff. Maybe it's right but I don't know. Ideas?? Remove it? Is it needed and just hooked to the wrong spot? Thanks

Pic 1 -This is the spring for the throttle I'm assuming.

Pic 2 Spring anchored to the front of the manifold.

It looks like you have a Holley carburetor so the throttle return springs will be different than the OEM setup with a QuadraJet carburetor.

Considering that you don't have an OEM carb, there is no "correct". So long as the springs pull the throttle closed when you release the pedal, that is how they are supposed to function. We have no idea if the spring you chose has the correct spring force or if it rubs on anything over the travel of the throttle linkage. Both of your installations look like that MIGHT be an issue at wide open throttle, but since you haven't provided any photos of that, it's difficult to provide useful info.

So that's the question, this is the set up as I got it. The spring at the rear of the carb (pic 2) is connected to the throttle ....so that functions when the accelerator pedal is released to close the throttle does it not OR, is the spring in Pic 1 needed to pull the throttle closed when I release the accelerator pedal....in other words I do need the springs on both sides of the throttle?

You need AT LEAST one spring that pulls the throttle closed. Either one of those will do that. Pulling forward above the throttle shaft pivot point is exactly the same as pulling backward below the pivot point. Most OEM installations use two concentric springs in case one breaks. Factory throttle springs tend to be low spring force to avoid making the throttle too hard to press.

That's what I was thinking but I haven't messed with a carburetor on a car in 40 years probably.! I was also, finding as you mentioned, that the accelerator pedal was hard to push. I'll pop the one off (going to the front of the engine and see what happens.) I'm assuming too, that the correct one is that rear one in pic #2. Thanks

Again, neither one is "correct". That tab the spring is connected to is supposed to be used for actuating a kickdown or TV cable. Any location is "correct" if it works for you.

Just got two new springs and put them on the rear towards the firewall. Much better feel on the accelerator pedal too. Before it was hard to push with the springs as they were.
Thanks for the help, one and all.
