Spacer?

So I have had my 71 cutlass almost 2 weeks and have a curious question. I removed air cleaner today to check filter and install the pipe from snorkel to manifold. I noticed a spacer between breather and carb. Is it supposed to be there? Pipe will not reach even if I remove the spacer. What's up? Oh yeah, it's supposed to be a period correct 71-455

Sometimes folks use a spacer to give clearance for an HEI distributor. If you can post pics of the carb/air cleaner/intake manifold/distributor it may help a lot with figuring out what's up.

I am betting on it having an HEI. That is how I cleared the air cleaner on my 72 Cutlass.

I don't know about the spacer between the carb and cleaner. If it has an aftermarket intake manifold like an Edelbrock the pipe won't reach the air cleaner. There were also many different hot air pipes used on different years, air cleaners and carbs.
