It will puke water if you rev it with the cap off. I'd start it up and jam a water hose into the radiator with slow stream and force bubble out. The put the cap on and see what your temp gauge says.

Although the bubbling out behavior with RPM changes is completely normal, I am interested in the large temperature difference between the left and right sides of the front manifold crossover.

Has anyone seen this before?

ME too Mdchanic thats what was driving me crazy. the passenger side looks fine. but for some reason the driver side swings so much that's why i thought head gasket was blocking flow. is there such thing as a high flow water pump for the 1970 455.

and oldscutlass iv done that it will still swing. sorta seams like if i really rev it up the temp will drop,

i put a 4 core rad in May 24th, 2011 and a water pump

maybe a pump like this http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...___#fragment-3

Well, the ones with the closed impellers are supposed to be better, but I have never compared them side by side.

I just can't help but wonder whether there is some sort of partial blockage on one side of the block somewhere.

Baffling.

so what i think im going to do is get a new Water Outlet

this one looks like there might a pinch in the neck that makes less water go back to the pump??? its a long shot i know. i might even take the pump off and try and open up that neck to let more water flow in.

any one have a good Outlet to recommend iv had both the chrome one started to worp and leek and the one i have now the bot holes seem to be a little bet to far out.

I had that problem with the 330 when I did the valve job on it! I had to force the bubble out with a water hose and a light flow after the thermo opened. If it's big swings it's definately a air pocket!

I'm thinking that hole has something to do with your overheating issue...that would've been my first fix.

Any time you draw air from around the radiator (via the hole instead of through the radiator) you are going to diminish the efficacy of the radiator.

The hole in the shroud is not going to cause wild swings in temp!

i dont think its the hole becouse that happened after this started. i know its not good but its not it. and wouldint that just make it get hoter and hoter not jump up a billion. im going to run it and try and get all the bubbles out.

ill tap a hole in the t stat too to let them come out quicker.

its fixed

2 things
First (and boy do I feel dumb) I had cyl 3 and 7 spark plug wires swapped.
Maybe that was causing that bank to get so much hotter. i need to look back at some older pics and see if i have the wires messed up then too??

Second I put a high flow t 180 stat in and the put some holes in so it would flow a bit, while the block was cold to help get all the air out fast. Then I put a funnel on top of the rad and filled it with anti-freeze so it would let all the bubbles flow out.

Feels great now! I knew after the rebuild the engine should feel a bit stronger but boy it’s a beast.

I can’t believe I let the spark plug wires thing slip by me. It’s also strange how well the car ran with them messed up.

I would not have drilled holes in the thermostat, but I guess since you live where it never gets cold, slow warm-ups aren't really a problem.

As for the plug wire switch - HA HA! - happens to all of us sooner or later.
You'd be amazed at how well these things will run without a few cylinders. Normally you'll get a "something's wrong" feeling when you're down to about five, but unless you're really paying attention, you'll never even notice if you're down one.
A buddy of mine drove a '67 Chrysler Newport with a 440 from coast to coast a few years back towing a trailer, and noticed a plug wire off when he got to California.
He never even felt it.
I'm going outside to check my wires right now .

And just to be clear: Did your "one side hotter than the other" problem clear up when you swapped the wires? If so, that's a good thing for us all to remember in the future.
I'd be interested in knowing whether the problem comes back if you swap them back for a few minutes.
