Shopping For A Valve Job
Shopping For A Valve Job
What are good questions to ask when shopping machine shops for a valve job? I have a new set of Procomps and new set of valves and springs, chose a cam, etc. Shooting for 450 hp 455 30 over around 10:1 compression.
One shop quoted me $200 the other $400.

Some typical questions would be if they'll actually measure valve stem to guide clearance on all valves, what equipment they'll use to perform the valve job, how many angles they'll use, if they'll measure your valve spring installed height and check the valve spring load, etc...
What kind of valve seals do they use? (hint: hopefully positive wiping viton/ rubber seals)
Can they GIVE YOU all the valve stem heights and spring installed heights written down for EACH valve?
3 angles? 3 on the intake is a must.
Stem to guide clearance.
25-30 deg back cuts on intake?
Find out how much extra it is, for these extras.

So it looks like they are using positive wiping seals. They are measuring the spring heights and requested the cam card to do so. I guess they had to shim the valve springs somewhat.
I will hear back from him with what they find.
