Power Steering Pump Pulley Removal

Is it possible to remove the pulley without removing the PS pump?
I cannot for the life of me get the pump to remain tight, the belt keeps loosening. I am thinking I don't have the 3rd bolt tight and I can't find it with the flashlight so it may not even be in there.

What tool do you guys like best for removing the pulley?

If you can’t locate the bolt and put a wrench on it, then you must conclude that it is not tightened properly.

I have never had to remove the pulley to reach all the bolts. Would you post a picture of your assembly so we can see what your working with? John

Sure will do. From what I can tell, I am missing a bolt. Maybe I'm just crazy.

Image from top down. You can see the top right bolt but nothing on the left.

View from the top. Appears to be missing the bottom left bolt.

Well, your reference photos is of a 1970's vintage squared off tank. I don't remember if they used the same brackets or not. But here's pictures of a loose 1968 pump that came off a car that had the nose burn. But the brackets are intact and still bolted to the pump. The only bolt with an adjustment is the one on the top behind the pulley. There are two bolts on the bottom that can be accessed from under the car, but they should just hold everything tight. There's a third one on this bracket that attaches to the back of the pump. Check out the photos and let us know if you still have questions. Many of us have been down this path before! John

Looking down on the pump

Here's the only bolt with a slot to adjust.

Here's a stud on the pump with a nut to hold it to the bracket

Here's a bolt going through the two brackets

Here's where a stud on the engine, timing cover goes through the two brackets

This is from underneath looking up at two bolts. The one on the right is the bolt without a nut on it two pictures back. The one on the left goes through just one bracket and into the pump.

I should have asked, do you have the bracket that is kind of flat attaching from the outside of the pump to an exhaust manifold bolt? Sometimes these get left off yet are needed to hold everything tight.

Here’s looking from underneath.
I may not need to remove the pulley after all. Is that hole where a bolt goes?
My top bolt, the one where you tighten it up has a lock washer and pretty thick washer on it. Should it have any?

I believe I do. Good tip.

Yes, it looks like you found the missing bolt. It will have a nut on the backside, might be tough to reach without taking the pump/bracket assembly off the engine. I believe that's the one that didn't have a nut on the backside in my pictures!

Is the nut welded to the pump or is this a 3 elbows would be nice situation? Would you happen to know what size bolt is needed there?
Do you know if the retaining bolt at the top requires a flat washer and lock washer or if it should just be a bolt only?
Thank you for all your help!

The adjusting bolt, yes mine does have both a flat washer and a lock washer on it. If you plan to do your own work I really like having a chassis service manual. There are a couple more good reference books that are nice to have. But getting a 1968 Chassis Service Manual will help you with things that are bound to come up. There's several on ebay right now and if you watch you should be able to pick one up for between $25 and $50.

Here's one for example: 1968 OLDSMOBILE CHASSIS SERVICE FACTORY MANUAL F-85 DELTA CRUISER PRE-OWNED | eBay

The nut is not welded to the back of the bracket, and maybe laying under the car with a swivel and extension you might be able to reach it. But it could be easier to unbolt it from where the brackets attach to the engine and put the bolt and nut on where you can easily see the backside. That might be why the bolt isn't there to begin with! The bolt itself takes a 1/2" wrench and is probably 3/4" to 1" long. If you get one of each at the hardware store then you can use the one that looks the best, enough room for the nut to snug down on it.

Looks like another bolt is missing in this bracket where it attaches to the block. Any ideas what size it might be? I believe a spacer goes between the bracket and block, any ideas on the length of that as well?

How is this pump even on the car at this point HAH

This bolt has a spacer between the bracket and the block. It seems like this was a larger bolt, maybe a 11/16" wrench to fit the head of the bolt? Let me see if I can come up with one to measure. John
