Oil selection

Just got some info from Mark on oil selection for my 455. He said go with VR1 20W-50. I am unsure of my bearing clearance at this point. It has a roller Cam. Same cam as 70cutty. Temp around my area is 50-85 on the hottest time of year. What's everyone's suggest? For break in and after ? I did already by 7 quarts of the Vr1 but can take back.

I'd go with 10W-30 or maybe 10W-40 for the summer, but if the builder says 20W-50 I'd assume he has his reasons.

Mark has been giving me advise throughout my build. My local machine shop assembled the short block.

I use vr1 20/50 in all my 455 builds. For break in and afterwards. For street and racing. Temps here in Kansas reach in the 100's and i have raced and drove my car on the street in low 50's. There is picture in my album December 9 2001 it was low fiftys and morning frost that day. Picture was taken at MADD track in Arkcity Kansas.

Cool. Like I said I don't know the bearing clearences. Would this oil be ok if clearences are tight?? Or am I over analyzing it? Just want a good oil from beginning to end with this engine. I don't wanna switch. Price isn't a concern as I have a lot wrapped into this thing and it ain't even done yet

Look at it this way if Mark cutlassefi was trusted to do your work on your engine! His advice should be taken into account as many have used him and are happy customers! The above post made by me is just what i used on my engines. I am not suggesting that what i use is the best oil for anyone's engine.Nothing more for me to say.I am not here in this thread to argue and is my last post in this thread.

If you don't know the bearing clearances then arguing over oil weight is armchair quarterbacking.
Just run it and see where your pressures wind up. If the oil pressure stays over 40 at idle then you can drop to a thinner oil.

Since you have a roller cam the whole moly/additive debate is non-applicable. Run whatever oil you want! Well, except the stuff from the Dollar Store.

.0023 and .0024 are clearences. Gunna run the 20W-50 on Breakin and see where it's at for pressure
