Oil pump pickup installation

I believe my engine failed due to the pickup pivoting down. Are these supposed to be welded once positioned?

Yes, once it is position on the right angle, have a few tack welds or buy the "bolt on" type like I did on Rock Auto.

I tack welded mine once in place but I saw a retainer that could be purchased to be sure the pick up stayed in place

It looks like the bolt on type are for the high flow pumps. Unfortunately I just purchased the standard volume pump so I will be spot welding the pickup once properly positioned.

Thanks for all the input.

Randy,
If you are going to weld it make sure to either TIG weld it with a proper rod for cast iron or braze it. I have seen guys try to MIG weld them and the weld almost always cracks.

Also if you braze it make sure and take the relief valve out first so the heat does not affect the spring.

Have it TIG welded using silicone bronze rod. It doesn't require enough heat to melt the base metal and fuses the two together very securely.

I'm thinking after all this I may just bite the bullet and go for a high volume pump with a bolt on pickup. Thanks for all the input.
