Oil Filter

I have an oil filter leak on my 455. I replaced the filter with a Wix 51258 filter and still has a leak. It appears to me that the leak is coming from between the housing and the filter as if its not completely tighten, but it is. The leak is not coming from the housing to the block. Have anyone else experienced this problem?

thanks
Gary

Possibly a damaged housing? Check for a gouge or a crack.

It's a possibility but it did not look damaged to me but maybe there is a hairline crack in it. I think I will order a new one and hopefully it resolves this issue.
Thanks

I had a similar situation once. I change my own oil. When it leaked, I removed the (new) filter and inspected the mounting. Turns out the rubber O-ring from the previous filter was stuck to the mounting. This doubled-up the O-rings, and prevented a good seal.

YMMV

I had a WIX filter leak on my Honda Odyssey. Replaced it with a Bosch. No more leak

Here's a hint. Use the 51049/1049 Wix/NAPA Gold, which is larger than the 51258/1258.

I replaced the housing which I suspected was either warped or cracked. I no longer have the leak and since I had purchased 6 Wix 51258 filters I used one.

Filter

Just had a wix filer plug up at less then 800 miles. It was causing the motor to knock on start up.
Going to start using Baldwin and fram filters again.
yes the problem went away with the change to a baldwin filter.

Did you open the Wix filter? Curious as to what may cause any newly-installed filter to plug up with less than 800 miles on it...

Yeah, was it actually a fault in the filter or something else?

What was it "plugged up" with ??? Never had a problem with Wix filters even though I typically stick to AC Delco on GM products

You wont know that for sure until you drive it enough to see if this filter gets "plugged up"

I would actually suspect the anti drainback valve if it was only noisy for the first few seconds. Was it "knocking" or "tapping" ?

I have just always had good luck with them. No reason to change. Same with Motocraft on Fords etc. Race engines get Wix Racing or Fram Racing. Same reason. Never had a problem, why change.

Joe, why would a larger filter be the solution?

It's not a solution, it is hint for better filtration. The larger filter has increased filter media surface area so it can filter out the same amount of contaminants while not restricting oil flow.

Hey Joe, I like your idea about using the larger WIX filter. Although the 51049 is bigger, according to Rock Auto it does not have an anti drain back valve in it. Does that matter?

Thanks,
Noel

i believe it does have the anti drain back valve. However it has a slightly larger filtration media, I believe 15 microns vs 10 for the 51258.

I stand corrected. I spoke with one of their “tech” reps awhile back. He told me about the filter media. He also told me that the 51049 was really for commercial application use and hyd oils. Apparently he was wrong there too.
But one other thing, the 51049 will only fit when running manifolds. I’ve never had a set of headers that would allow the 51049 to fit without removing them to change the filter. Not hard on the dyno but a pain if they’re in the car.

My 350 has Heddman headers and the 51049 oil filter fits easily.

Good to know, it won’t fit with flowtech or hookers I know.

As you said, good to know, I'll have to keep that in mind when discussing the larger filter and headers.

Maybe you have a issue with your bypass on your filter adaptor?

I have always used the baldwin bt259 filter with the bypass in the adapter plugged.
the bt259 has a internal 20psi bypass. I have also used the wix 51243 with no issues.

Not true. I had a set of Hookers on a 66 442 with the 400 and later with a 455 with four speed. Used 51049 exclusively every oil change and did not have to remove the headers.

Then something had changed because when I have Flowtech or 1 7/8 Hookers on my Dyno engines there isn’t enough room to drop the filter far enough away from the mount to remove it.
