intake for 65 400

which intake is going to give me my best performance, but not cause any issues with the hood? modifying my hood will be a no go in my build, but i want an aluminum intake. will the edelbrock performer be ideal for what i want? the torqer intake seems to be pretty tall, and i'm seeing issues with breathers. i want to keep my factory chrome breather as well.

thans

What has been done to the engine? You need an intake that matches the rest of the build.

nothing fancy, had to bore .030, stock valves, little better than stock cam, I haven’t talked to the builder to know exact specs on cam.

Hi,

A performer will sit a little high, requiring a drop base aire cleaner, or have 3/8-1/2" taken off of carb base mount to gain clearance, other option is a repo W30 intake or old Edelbrock OB4 wich is taller than stock intakes but not as tall as the Performer or other intakes available to the best of my limited knowledge.

Regards,
Jim

X2 JMOS4 , I bought a drop base air cleaner bottom same diameter is your stock top. Cleared my 64 hood with a performer. ( not much wiggle room though)

See if the builder can supply you with a cam card. You might be fine with the factory intake.

so, reading edelbrocks website, the performer 2151 intake that is made for the 400-425-455 is only for the 39 degree angle from 1966-1984, which intake is for the 65 b block 400?

Hi again,

The whole 39 degree vs 45 degree is the cam/lifter angle not the intake mounting surface angle, although I have heard most AL intakes are not true and a cleanup pass by a machine shop helps ensure a good sealing surface. Any BBO/tall deck Oldsmobile intake will fit unless you have custom heads, or rare nascar/dragacing parts.

If your 400 block is a 65, check casting numbers, it's a 45 degree, if it's a later 400 67 I believe was the first year for 39 degrees and unfortunately they had both going on for that year, to the best of my knowledge.

Regards,
Jim

I know 64-65 Cutlass 442 use a Torker no problem just knock off the center stud on the top chrome piece. Other than that all others work too.

I looked at descriptive literature for the Edelbrock Performer 2151 intake on the Edelbrock, Year One, JEGs, and Summit websites and all say the 2151 can be used with all BBO's (400-425-455) from '64 up. The only application issue is if you're wanting to retain an OEM ram air set-up, and then you may run into clearance issues. I am running one on my '67 400ci, with a Holley Street Demon and it runs great. Hopes this helps.

i honestly forgot to ask. i told him i wanted the best lift i could get on pump gas and not need a stall convertor if i switched to an automatic. the cam should be here this week so i will know more about it then. it is a custom grind from delta cams in tacoma washington, he appears to have plenty of cores for grinding and was pretty cheap according to what my machinist said. 180 bucks with shipping to northern ky, that's cam and lifters

Don't know that lift is going to affect your octane requirement. Excessive duration, however, will bleed off cylinder pressure and actually make the engine more compatible with lower octane.

Hope you post the numbers when you get them. Could have an effect on manifold compatibility and necessity for a torque converter with a higher stall speed.

That looks like a pretty good cam for your build. Interesting that it's very close to (but not quite) a single pattern according to the net figures. A little more rump-rump, but calm enough to be compatible with your factory intake if you want.

looking back at this thread, I may have it confused with another one. What kind of pistons are you using? What compression do you expect?

honestly couldn’t tell you, I told my builder I wanted something a little better than stock, but That I didn’t plan on racing. I believe they’re the same style as factory, just .030.

already purchased the performer intake, trying to return it so I can buy chads used one but they’re fighting me on it through eBay.

With all the supply chain issues, you'd think they would have buyers lining up for it.

With regard to your engine build, you might want to get as much info as you can. Compression (and associated compression height) is kind of important when selecting cams and manifolds (intake and exhaust). Try to take a holistic approach -- everything has to work together.
