Previous owner put a deep sump oil pan on my 70 442. So I'm not sure how many extra quarts is the proper crankcase level. I can tell the dipstick has been modified so it is not trustworthy. I drained all the oil out and got 6 1/2 qts out not including the filter. Filter was prob another 1/2 qt. So getting 7 qts out doesn't mean for sure that's right if previous owner was an idiot. (I have found a lot of badly improper work). Any suggestions on how to determine the proper refill?

If it were mine? With a filter change, I would put 6 in and be done with it. 5 would be fine but with the expanded sump, might as well run the extra quart. You can run 7 and be fine too, but the main idea is to keep the oil level away from the rotating assembly so that oil doesn’t get aerated.
Opinions may vary.

I bought a GM dipstick and tube thru a GM dealer and installed it. On my engine, almost 8 quarts will have it reading just a little over full. I just run 7 quarts and leave it at that. I figure 6 quarts in the pan, one quart in the filter and oil passages is good enough. Look at it this way, the factory pan holds 4 quarts, with this pan you have 2 quarts more than the factory pan and the oil level is further from the crank.
Engine Masters did an interesting video on oil control using a big block Chevy with a factory pan, a fancy aftermarket pan, different oil fill capacity’s, all while monitoring oil pressure and engine power. There was a surprising difference in power, and oil pressure.
I would call the previous owner to ask how many quart oil pan he installed. I would also ask how the previous owner set the oil pickup height with the new oil pan.....or is it the stock oil pickup height.
If it was mine, I would put in six quarts with a filter change. Run it and then check it. I would put enough in to bring the level on the dipstick to full or near full (slightly under not slightly over).

Can you look in it through the drain plug with a borescope to confirm that the pickup is positioned properly? Does it look deeper than stock or just wider?
