Help - Rochestester 4GC leaking from top

Hello All,

I have a oldsmobile 98, 1964 with 4GC Rochester carb. I rebuilt the carb about two months ago and had been working great. Starting last week I noticed that when I would turn off the car there was a very strong smell of gas. I decided to remove the air cleaner and it seems there is fuel leaking from the top gasket. The screws are tight, and it did not leak before this started. Also a friend of mine was driving behind me the other day, and told me he could smell unburned fuel.

Does anyone know have an idea of what could be happening, the impression I get is that the carb bowls are overflowing due to uncontrolled fuel going into them. My thought is, it could be that something has happened to the float or that one of the needles is not seating properly and closing the flow of fuel.

I have not done anything to the fuel pump, so my assumption is that it is still pumping fuel at its usual pressure, I don't see a reason why fuel pump pressure would suddenly increase and be causing an issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am planning to take out the carb this weekend and open it up to see what is happening.

Thanks!

I think you figured it out, it's over filling the float bowl-s.Either a bad float or needle and seat leaking.

Recheck the float height.

Recheck everything connected with the floats

It sounds like you are on the right track. There appears to be too much fuel in the float bowl. Recheck the float height and drop. Be sure that the floats are not dragging on the adjacent walls and that none are leaking. Also be sure that the pivots are not binding. If all that is good, take a close look at both needle/seat assemblies.

Might want to replace your fuel filter while working on it. Crud getting caught in the fuel inlet seat is a common cause.
